Although some of the social media platforms we used to use are no longer relevant – such as MySpace or Hi5 – others continue to gain ground and are undoubtedly a valuable asset in helping certain businesses to grow.
There are social media platforms to suit all tastes and preferences; those who prefer a more visual approach might like Instagram for posting photos and sharing their daily moments in Stories; those who prefer more elaborate posts with text and graphics, and want to create adverts to reach a wider audience of people or customers, will prefer Facebook; LinkedIn is moving away from being the ‘social network for recruiting’ and is becoming more like ‘Facebook’, where you can post updates, use hashtags and even set up a company page… but hang on, it’s still a long way from giving Facebook a run for its money.
Facebook has been in existence since 4 February 2004 and was created by Mark Zuckerberg. On 4 October 2012, Facebook reached the milestone of 1 billion active users, making it the most active social network of all time!
Do you still remember the first version of Facebook?
It’s completely different now!!!
We can add a cover image or video at the top, provided it is the correct size; there is a menu with various settings; we can read our own messages or messages on the page in question; check all notifications for comments, likes and shares; and view the page’s statistics…
Also in the top-left corner, there are several tabs providing access to the page’s ‘About’ menu, which contains information such as contact details, address and other relevant information; there is also a photo and video gallery, and a reviews tab where customers can rate the page or the company’s services…
Facebook is the most up-to-date and improved social network; there are new features on this platform almost every day.
As well as this version, there is another, even more recent one that users can choose to use; it has a more mobile-style design and can be a bit confusing for beginners.
In this version, the Menu is in the top-left corner and all the information from the ‘About’ menu is displayed at the bottom.
And you, which version do you prefer?
Moving on to Instagram, let’s start by saying that it’s a mobile app where you can share photos and videos; it includes a chat feature and you can also create fun stories.
It was launched in 2010 by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, but it wasn’t until 2017 that it really started to take off.
In 2012, it reached 80 million users worldwide and Facebook acquired Instagram for approximately 1 billion dollars. In 2015, the platform launched the famous ‘Boomerang’ feature, which turns images into looping mini-videos.
Instagram has a few features on a computer, although it’s still quite limited in many respects. You can post on this social network via your computer (find out how here).
