Spotify is finally moving forward with its plan to create an official app for the Apple Watch. The streaming service has launched a beta version of the app for iOS that supports Apple’s smartwatch.
The report originated from members of Reddit, who found a recent version of the official Spotify app for the Apple Watch on TestFlight, Apple’s platform for testing beta versions of iOS apps.
But anyone expecting a feature-packed version right from the start may be disappointed. For the time being, users will only be able to control music playback via their smartphone and, much to the disappointment of the vast majority, it will not yet be possible to store music offline on the Apple Watch.
In 2017, a developer called Andrew Chang had already created an unofficial version with more interesting features, including offline playback, called Spotty. Shortly afterwards, it was renamed Snowy, and Andrew revealed that Spotify had hired him to create a companion app using the company’s iOS SDK.
Anyone interested in becoming a Spotify beta tester for the Apple Watch can fill in a form provided by the company.
